Good early, 19th century. Spiers of Ayr 13 3/4" long dovetailed steel panel plane in very good condition for its age. Gunmetal lever cap with the earliers small upside down Spiers stamp. Stunning dark rosewood infill with fully enclosed rear handle. Original backing iron but with a full length old replacement blade by Mawhood of Sheffield which produces a fine mouth. VERY RARE full length 1 3/4" wide Stanley type blade by Robert Sorby of Sheffield. As far as I was aware Robert Sorby didn't make a number 3 size plane or a compass plane so I don't know what this blade was for other than competition for Stanley and Record in the spare blade market. Slight discolouration but nothing serious.
